Household Hazardous Wastes
    • We all have to dispose of some items that contain toxic substances, such as paints, solvents, batteries, electronic wastes, and used oil..

      The following provides information on nearby and convenient ways to dispose of some common household items that contain hazardous materials:

      · Styrofoam Peanuts -- The UPS Store, 4200 Wisconsin Ave NW (202-363-8044). Accepts Styrofoam packing peanuts for reuse and recycling.

      · Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulbs, Rechargeable Batteries -- Ace Hardware, 4500 Wisconsin Ave. NW, lower level (corner of River Road). Free parking, with a validated ticket, in the garage beneath the complex; enter from River Road.

      · Electronics and Appliances, Including TVs (up to 32” Screen)-- Best Buy, 4500 Wisconsin Ave., NW, lower level (corner of Albemarle by the Tenleytown Metro). Free garage parking with validation; enter from River Road. You will be charged a small fee, of $35 for TVs, monitors, and laptops.

      • Household Hazardous and Electronic Wastes -- D.C. Department of Public Works Fort Totten Transfer/Recycling Station, 9400 John F. McCormack Drive, NE (about a 10-15 minute drive from McLean Gardens).
        • The Transfer Station is open for public drop-off of accepted items most Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and one Thursday per month.

    The Ft. Totten Station accepts the following household hazardous wastes:

    Aerosols Computers and Components
    (delete the hard drive contents!)
    Oils (used) Solvents
    Antifreeze Drain Openers Paints Televisions
    Asbestos Tile Fluorescent Light Bulbs Pesticides Video Equipment
    Batteries Gasoline (small amounts) Petroleum Products Thinners
    Brake Fluid Mercury Thermometers Polishes Wood Preservatives
    Cleansers Moth Balls Propane Tanks  

    The Ft. Totten Station will not accept the following household hazardous wastes:

    Air Conditioners Dioxins Radioactive Materials
    Ammunition Explosives Tires
    Biologically Active Wastes Microwave Ovens
