Residents should make a clear distinction among their discards:
 ● those that should be recycled on site,
 ● those that should go into the trash, and 
 ● those that need special treatment (e.g., large items, hazardous waste).
 
Both the trash and recycled materials are picked up by outside contractors (not the DC government).
